Is Hagia Sophia open on Friday?
And the second thing nobody tells you: most of it is free. Checked September 2026.
Not between noon and 2:30pm. Hagia Sophia admits no visitors during the Friday prayer. It is a working mosque, not a museum, and nobody warns you at the door. If you land on a Friday you plan the morning around it rather than discovering it at the gate.
The part that costs €25 is not the part you came for
There are two ways into Hagia Sophia and they are not the same building experience.

They are separate doors. On my first trip I walked in under the dome for nothing, because I did not know anyone was paying. I only found out later that people queue at a ticket office for a building I had walked straight into.
The gallery is worth the money if mosaics are your reason for coming. If you have one day in Istanbul and a list to get through, the free hall gives you the thing itself, and €25 buys you a meal and a ferry instead.
Under 8s are free, and museum passes do not work here
The city museum passes that cover Topkapı and the rest do not cover the Hagia Sophia gallery. Do not buy a pass expecting it to.
Friday, in practice
The closure is roughly noon to 2:30pm. Treat the edges as soft: prayer times shift through the year, and the staff close the visitor entrance before the prayer starts rather than exactly on the hour.
The workable Friday plan is to be inside before 11am or after 3pm. The Blue Mosque is five minutes away on the same square and has the same rhythm, so do not assume you can simply swap one for the other at noon. Friday midday in Sultanahmet is the hour to eat lunch in.
Mosque etiquette, briefly
- Shoes off at the entrance. There are racks and bags.
- Shoulders and knees covered. Women cover their hair. Scarves are available at the door and you do not need to buy one outside.
- Do not walk in front of someone praying, and do not photograph people praying.
- Quiet. It is not a museum hush, it is a working building.
Nobody will be rude to you about any of this. Getting it right costs nothing and changes how the visit feels.

Is Hagia Sophia free to enter?
The prayer hall on the ground floor is free, through its own door. The upper gallery costs €25. Most visitors photograph the free part.
Do I need a ticket for Hagia Sophia?
Only for the upper gallery. You can walk into the main hall without one, outside prayer times.
What time does Hagia Sophia close on Friday?
Visitors are not admitted from about noon until about 2:30pm for the Friday prayer. Outside that window Friday is a normal day.
Do I need a visa for Turkey as a US citizen?
No visa. But airline check in desks apply a six month passport validity default of their own, and you want one blank page for the stamp. Two minutes on the State Department page for Turkey settles it.
